The Karoo through history
Long before modern town boundaries, San hunter-gatherers and Khoekhoe pastoral communities lived across parts of the wider Karoo. Rock art, archaeological sites, place names and oral histories preserve evidence of these earlier inhabitants and their cultural traditions.
Colonial expansion brought changing patterns of landownership, displacement and conflict. During the nineteenth century, some settlements developed around missions and churches; others grew around farms, trading places, river crossings, copper and diamond mining, or railway junctions. Later history includes the South African War, segregation and apartheid, and struggles over land and rights.
Explore each destination's individual History & Heritage section for local events, families, institutions and places. These town histories remain open to correction and contributions from local historians, cultural organisations and communities.
