About
Zoar began as a mission settlement in 1817 when land on the farm Elandsfontein was provided for missionary work. Its history includes formerly enslaved people and other communities seeking a settled home, followed by changes in missionary administration and local landholding. The older mission buildings remain important to local heritage.
