About
Vanwyksvlei was founded in 1881 in the Northern Cape's arid Karoo interior. The name combines a family name with vlei, meaning a wetland or marsh. The Vanwyksvlei Dam, built in the 1880s, is part of the local history of water infrastructure in a drought-prone district.
