About
Construction of a steel bridge over the Groot River began in 1911. It opened in 1913 as the Lady de Waal Bridge, named for the wife of Cape Administrator Sir Frederick de Waal. Floods washed it away in 1916 and again in 1921, and it was rebuilt on both occasions before a concrete bridge replaced it in 1974.
