About
Graaff-Reinet became a centre of frontier political resistance in the 1790s. In 1795 local burghers rejected the authority of the Dutch East India Company and proclaimed what became known as the Republic of Graaff-Reinet. British occupation of the Cape later that year brought the episode to an end.
