About

The same page records that John Alexander Baxter, fighting with the Boer forces, was captured in British khaki, tried, and executed in October 1901. Accounts of the capture differ, and the archive says those differences should stay visible. His remains were later reinterred in the Aberdeen cemetery. On 12 May 1902 Commandant Carel van Heerden was killed in town, near the Dutch Reformed Church, while his men tried to take horses held by the British — less than three weeks before the Treaty of Vereeniging on 31 May 1902. Cemetery memorials commemorate 25 British officers and men and four Boer dead, including Baxter. Source: Aberdeen Hub — war history and cemeteries https://aberdeen.townhub.co.za/history/war-history
