About

Karoo Heartland records sharp division in town, and that 139 residents joined the Boer forces while still British subjects of the Cape Colony. In March 1901 Lawrence Edward Grace Oates of the 6th Inniskilling Dragoons was shot in the thigh in a district skirmish, twice refused to surrender, and was nursed by the Harvey family at 16 Brand Street, where he turned 21. The limp stayed with him. He later died with Scott’s polar party in 1912. Source: Karoo Heartland — History of Aberdeen https://www.karooheartland.com/history-of-aberdeen/
